Multiplicity of Zeros and Discrete Orthogonal Polynomials
We consider a problem of bounding the maximal possible multiplicity of a zero of some expansions ∑ aiFi(x), at a certain point c, depending on the chosen family {Fi}. The most important example is a polynomial with c = 1. It is shown that this question naturally leads to discrete orthogonal polynomials. Using this connection we derive some new bounds, in particular on the multiplicity of the ze...
متن کاملTurán Inequalities and Zeros of Orthogonal Polynomials∗
We use Turán type inequalities to give new non-asymptotic bounds on the extreme zeros of orthogonal polynomials in terms of the coefficients of their three term recurrence. Most of our results deal with symmetric polynomials satisfying the three term recurrence pk+1 = xpk − ckpk−1, with a nondecreasing sequence {ck}. As a special case they include a non-asymptotic version of Máté, Nevai and Tot...
متن کاملDifferential Equations and Zeros of Orthogonal Polynomials
This is a survey of some methods for finding inequalities, monotonicity properties and approximations for zeros of orthogonal polynomials and related functions. The methods are based on the use of the ordinary differential equations satisfied by the functions. Based on a talk presented at the NATO Advanced Study Institute on Orthogonal Polynomials and their Applications, Ohio State University, ...
متن کاملZeros of Generalized Krawtchouk Polynomials
The zeros of generalized Krawtchouk polynomials are studied. Some interlacing theorems for the zeros are given. A new infinite family of integral zeros is given, and it is conjectured that these comprise most of the non-trivial zeros. The integral zeros for two families of q-Krawtchouk polynomials are classified.
متن کاملMonotonicity of Zeros of Orthogonal Laurent Polynomials
Monotonicity of zeros of orthogonal Laurent polynomials associated with a strong distribution with respect to a parameter is discussed. A natural analog of a classical result of A. Markov is proved. Recent results of Ismail and Muldoon based on the Hellman-Feynman theorem are also extended to a monotonicity criterion for zeros of Laurent polynomials. Results concerning the behaviour of extreme ...
